When you love and buy sneakers on the regular, you will reach a point where you have amassed a sizeable collection with decently strong emotional ties to some pairs.
And sooner or later, you cannot postpone thinking about the question of all questions any longer:
What are your Top 3 sneakers?!
There is a simple explanation as to why the Boiler Room announcer was screaming "From now on, we're gonna write Funk with a V" after David Vunk had just finished his Dekmantel set in 2018: He had just wrecked complete havoc at the relatively inconspicuous 7.30pm time slot. While the Boiler Room stage had certainly hosted its fair share of great performances, they most definitely hadn't seen or expected anything like David's inimitable genre blend of italo disco, electro, acid and house. So its fair to say that the owner of record label "Moustache Records" and one of the head honchos of the producer duo "Im Kellar" has seen almost everything the music industry has to offer after 25 years (and counting!) of blessing international crowds at low-key club nights and renowned festivals.
But today, we're here to discuss one of David's favourite past-times: his sneaker collection. Given his longstanding friendship with Woei, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to get the man himself to reveal his Top 3 sneakers for the ninth episode of Kickin the Door. Enjoy!
We are curious - What are David's Top 3 sneakers in his collection and more importantly, what are the stories behind them?
NIKE AIR MAX 1 "MASTER"
(Released in 2017)
I just really love this shoe. I could’t get my hands on it when it was initially released and the resell-prices where way too high for me. Then, one day when I was visiting Sneakerness here in Rotterdam, I stumbled across a pair and Woei convinced me to buy it. After some hard negotiations with the seller, we finally came to an agreement. Even through the price was still a bit high, I was happy as a child and I haven’t regretted it ever since!
NIKE AIR MAX 1/97 "SEAN WOTHERSPOON"
(Released in 2018)
I used to wear this pair A LOT. But one day, I completely trashed them at a festival by accident. I was extremely close to just gibing up on them, but then I brought them to my mother. She did her utmost best to get them clean again, worked her magic and oh boy did she not disappoint. When I saw that the resell price shot up to around €1400,- it made me even more happy that I still own and wear this pair to this day. Shout-out to my mom for this one!
NIKE AIR MAX 1 "ANIMAL PACK 2.0" x ATMOS
(Released in 2018)
Way back in the day, before Woei even had his store, he used to have a wall filled with I don't know how many pairs of the Nike Air Max 1 “Animal” 1.0. At that time, I wasn’t that much into sneakers and I only thought that they were too expensive, so I didn't buy a pair. And now, 10 years later, they are still too expensive. I saw them recently with starting prices around the €1000 mark. But luckily, in 2018, Atmos and Nike decided to bring back this slightly altered black version. So this pair is a good replacement for the version that I missed out on. But to be honest, this version is more beautiful. Who knows… maybe one day I can call myself the lucky owner of both versions...
NIKE AIR MAX 1 "BEAST PACK"
(Released in 2007)
Woei gave me this pair 13 years ago! He asked me to spin some records during the opening of the store and gave me this beauty in exchange. So this is a gift that is really special to me. I also think that this pair started my love for animal prints on sneakers. HAHA!
